10 Things to do When You Retire

For some people, feelings of loss, apprehension, and excitement might come with retirement. You’ve spent decades working a majority of the week and now you have tons of free time – how are you going to spend it? You might feel bewildered and wonder what you’re going to do with so much time on your hands!

Once you transition into the retirement life, you’ll probably find enjoyment in having so much time. It’s your chance to finally do all of the things you love, go where you’ve always wanted to go, and visit friends and family that you were unable to visit while you were working.

Retirement is also a great time to stabilize your finances. By now, you’ve hopefully paid off all of your debts and are ready to live a retirees life.

Travel the World

With so much time on your hands, one of the best ways to spend it is by traveling! Take a long trip to the other side of the world and explore countries you’ve never been to. You can even buy a one-way flight and spend as much time as you want traveling and exploring. If you’re totally committed to traveling the world, you could even sell your house so you don’t have any ties at home. Now is your chance for the adventure of a lifetime!

Volunteer

If you feel like spending your days at home, then you can choose to volunteer once you retire. This is a great way to give back to the community and spend your time working for a good cause. Better yet, you can even volunteer abroad so you can travel and volunteer at the same time!

Stabilize Your Finances

Now that you’re retired, you can sit down and look at all of your expenses and create a budget that will allow you to live a fulfilling life in retirement. Although you might have to cut costs in some areas of your life, you’ve hopefully saved up enough money to keep you afloat and have paid off all of your debts.

There are a few ways you can stabilize your finances when you retire. Firstly, you should minimize many of your expenses – move to a smaller house, eat out less, and minimize your transportation costs.

You should also take advantage of social security. Wait until you’re 70 to start collecting your social security checks instead of starting to collect them when you’re in your 60’s. That way, you’ll get an increased rate and more of a guarantee that your checks will last you through the years.

Make sure you budget and plan for inflation. It’s no surprise that things increase in price over time, so make sure you plan ahead so you’re not shocked when it costs more to take the train now than it did several years ago.

Start Investing

One of the best ways to make your money last through retirement is to start investing. You’ll have plenty of time to invest and work out a solid investment plan now that you’re not working. Take a look at investing in real estate, stocks, and bonds.

You can also take advantage of your credit card rewards. Many credit cards offer points and rewards when you spend them. This can help you save in many different areas like travel, grocery shopping, and online shopping.

This is especially helpful if you have a few grandkids and need to buy them gifts throughout the year – use your credit card points to buy them the best gifts possible while saving money at the same time!

Take a Class

This can be a language class, cooking class, sewing class, or anything you’ve wanted to learn but never had the time to do. You can take language classes at your local community college or join an art or cooking program nearby to learn new skills! Use your time wisely to learn and expand your knowledge.

You can also spend your time reading. Tap into that never-ending book list that you’ve written over the years. According to Business Insider, spending your days reading has a variety of health benefits, such as reduced stress and a reduced likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s.

Start a Business

You can start your own business in your neighborhood in something that interests you! Whether that’s teaching classes or selling something you make, you’ll have plenty of time to run your own business on your own terms.

Pick up Online Freelance Work

If the idea of zero income scares you, you could always pick up some freelance work! There are tons of freelance jobs online that will allow you to work from wherever you want in the world. Whether you’re a writer, photographer, or just plain tech savvy, you should be able to find work that will make you a decent income.

Move Anywhere You Want

Now that you’ve retired, this probably means that your kids have moved out, too. You can now choose to move out of your neighborhood and anywhere you want! Whether you’ve wanted to live in the city or the country, now’s the time to pack up and change location.

Become a Pro Budgeter

Retiring means you’re not going to have a steady income. With that being said, you can use this to your advantage and figure out ways to cut costs and budget your finances. Some ways to do this is to take advantage of Senior Discounts, go grocery shopping, and move to a smaller house.

Relax

You’ll have plenty of time to kick back and relax. Spend your days walking through nature, drinking tea, reading books, listening to music, or anything else that you associate with relaxation.

There’s so much to do when you retire that you’re going to feel like you don’t have enough time to do it all! You’ve spent decades working and saving money – now it’s time for you to focus on yourself and do the things you love most.
